Application ProfilesInternational Government Agency Seeks Specialized Document Security Features An international legislative agency needed to guard against the duplicating and altering of government-issued tax bonds. The Challenge The agency required a paper roll product that incorporated document security features to prevent the bonds from being duplicated or modified. As an added challenge, the tropical climate and hot temperatures caused conventional thermochromic ink to disappear under "normal" conditions, when they were intended to be visible. The Solution Miami Systems was able to incorporate the latest security features into this product, and by producing the rolls in 5-color "jumbo" format and then slitting down to smaller individual rolls, was able to achieve printing economies that made the pricing more attractive. See "What We Do" product section for additional details on jumbo rolls. The document security features were the key to solving the customer's challenges. Incorporated into a gray screen is a void panto using the most current technology to prevent duplication on the latest color copiers. When an attempt is made to copy the document, the word VOID shows up predominantly in the gray screened area. The name of the government agency was printed in thermochromic ink on the document. When exposed to an appropriate heat source as when touched or rubbed with the fingers, the ink disappears so you can determine if it's an original document, and quickly reappears when removed from the heat as the paper cools. This feature serves two antifraud purposes: if placed on a copier, the heat generated during copying would make the name disappear, so it wouldn't show up on the copy. Also, if the document were duplicated using other means, the ink wouldn't disappear and reappear, so an agent could determine that the duplicated piece was not an original document. To deal with the hot climate conditions, a specialized thermochromic ink with a higher activation point was used so the words would be visible under normal conditions. Additional anti-fraud features were incorporated as well, but cannot be revealed in the interest of security. |
